Internal Medicine News - Albuterol advisory
Two recent outbreaks of lower respiratory tract colonization and infection with Burkholderia cepacia prompted a public health advisory from the Food and Drug Administration.
The outbreaks, like several others reported in the literature, were attributed to contamination of multidose bottles of albuterol sulfate; in most cases, they occurred in the hospital intensive-care setting among patients receiving mechanical ventilation. The advisory calls for adherence to good, aseptic technique on the part of those administering the medication.
